Swedish Massage and Sports Massage
Swedish MassageSwedish massage was developed by the Swedish doctor Henrik Per Ling in the 1700s. It is a very flexible massage treatment. It can be robust and effective in releasing chronic muscular pain and other chronic conditions. Equally, it can be deliciously soothing, effortlessly working away the stresses and strains of modern life to leave your mind and body rejuvenated.
Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes. The five strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fibre) and vibration/shaking. The strokes are perfomed in differing sequences and at a strength and depth according to the client's needs and wishes.
Sports Massage is a regular training tool for athletes, but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion issues.
Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasises prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.
But you don't have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also beneficial for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The massage therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area.
